Supporting Lakeridge Health through the COVID pandemic

November 6, 2020

In past years, DKI-CRCS has shown support to Lakeridge Health both in dollars, PPE and through leadership in the LaunchPad group. This year, the large Night Shift event couldn’t take place because of COVID restrictions, at exactly the same time medical systems across the country are being pushed to their limits.

The fundraising team at the Lakeridge Health Foundation have had to change tactics this year, and the community has stepped up to show support.

“People are recognizing the importance of community health more than ever,” said Daina Robinson, Director, Communications and Donor Relations at Lakeridge Health Foundation. “The community has come forward in a big way with both cash and in-kind donations this year. People definitely recognize the need to support hospital staff.”

The Foundation has received support through direct mail, telephone and online channels, but have had to change how they approach some of their biggest fundraising projects. The annual golf tournament that had been scheduled for July was cancelled, and the gala normally held in November has taken on a new form.

“We’ve created an exclusive online auction where people can bid on some amazing items and packages,” said Robinson.

The list includes a spa day and dinner package, a cottage getaway, and a work-from-home prize package. For Durham devotees, there’s a Taste of Durham Region package, and Hockey fans can choose between a signed Connor McDavid hockey stick, or a signed John Tavares Maple Leafs jersey (or choose both!).

The auction will take place with online bidding from November 25-28, but there are advanced bidding opportunities for those looking to try to stake an early claim.

Following the auction, there will be a special recognition event where participants will be invited to join a private virtual gathering to celebrate the auction and the community’s support.

Those involved in the LaunchPad program have also had the chance to join virtual workshops to learn from top experts at Lakeridge Health and discover more about the work supported by the foundation. Getting involved with the Foundation opens the doors to programs such as this, and opportunities to learn more about the amazing work being done by Lakeridge Health.

Robinson’s team has been working non-stop since mid-March, all while working from home, to pivot the fundraising plans for the year. As a second wave hits Canadian communities across the country, the importance of community health continues to be front of mind.

“There’s 11 of us including me on the team, and everyone has really stepped up with creative ideas for what we can do during the pandemic,” said Robinson. “everyone has worked so hard because we are all so connected to the cause.”

“I want to extend a thank you to our Durham community and express our gratitude for the donations and volunteer time this year.”
