On May 22, members of DKI-CRCS took part in a five kilometer walk to support the removal of financial barriers for children in sports.

The walk was organized by the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce (GOCC) as a part of their second annual Chamber Corporate Challenge. Walk or run, the challenge asked local businesses to enter a team and make a donation to participate in the event.

DKI-CRCS registered a team and donated $600 to the challenge, bringing 12 teammates and two furry friends to take a stroll along the Oshawa waterfront.

Their Opportunity

In total, GOCC raised $1,800 for Their Opportunity, the charity of choice for this year’s challenge.

Their Opportunity is a national children’s charity that supports youth who can’t afford to participate in sports and recreational programs. According to Randy Gill, the president and CEO of Their Opportunity, currently over 60, 000 children from across Canada are receiving subsidies.

The charity was born in Oshawa and now helps children in 70 cities across the country, including 35 Indigenous communities. Their Opportunity asks children who receive subsidies through their programs to pay it forward by volunteering in the community.

Our Participation

Our team of walkers was happy to get outside to enjoy the sunshine and support GOCC.

Carrie Smith participated in the walk with her daughter, Janai.

Smith said it felt amazing to be able to give back to a program like Their Opportunity as she received support from a similar program to help put her daughter in cheerleading.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for kids in lower income families,” she said. “My child has been sponsored for cheer so, I can relate to it and, I think it’s great.”

Henry Remiz said the walk was wonderful.

“I continue to be so proud that DKI-CRCS supports the Oshawa Chamber, which then supports our broader community,” Remiz said. “It was good to hear Randy speak about the important work done by Their Opportunity.”

As a long-term member of GOCC, our DKI-CRCS team was glad to help give back to the Oshawa community.
